Anise seeds

Anise is sweet and highly aromatic, with a distinctive flavor. The seeds, whole or ground, are used to prepare teas and tisanes (alone or in combination with other aromatic herbs). Anise is a common ingredient in a wide variety of regional and ethnic sweets, including black gummies, British anise balls, Italian pizzelle, German Pfeffernüsse, Austrian Anisbögen, Dutch muisjes, and New Mexican bizcochitos.

Anise also plays an important role in beverages such as Mexican atole de anís and champurrado (a drink similar to hot chocolate). In Pakistan and India, anise is commonly used as a digestive after meals. In ancient Rome, spiced anise-flavored cakes called mustachos were served at the end of feasts, which eventually led to the custom of serving cake at weddings.
